Angled Fillet Tutorial

  • To create a 1/4 inch rounded fillet between the box top and the angled cylinder the drawing is set up as shown.
  • The 2 Light Blue boxes are placeholders for Cross Sections and Parallel Lines.
    • Boxes are 1/2 the radius of the fillet thick and surround the cylinder.

  • Use the points shown to do Cross Sections.
    • ( Some intersections such as between grids and planes can use Surface Intersection instead, but Cross Section worked best here.)
    • Command: Solids->Cross Section
    • Select X-Z plane.
    • Gravity Snap at each Arrow and hit F3 to repeat the command.
    • This should give you the 3 lines around the cylinder as shown.
  • IMPORTANT: Select each of the 3 lines and do Vector Convert on each one.

  • Open a new 2D drawing and layout the angle of the cylinder to the box.
    • Fillet the lines to 1/4 inch and check the box: Leave original lines
    • Use Parallel by Distance to create a parallel line above the horizontal line1/2 the radius of the fillet.
    • Extend the line past the angled line with Extend
    • Select Dimension and Double click on Intersect Snap to set both dimension points.
    • This is the parallel offset for the middle cross section. (0.068)

  • In Layers, click on Separate.
    • Determine layer of cylinder with Info Box and turn it off.
  • Select Parallel by Distance and enter value 1/4.
    • Select lower Cross Section and then Gravity Snap to point at small Arrow.
      • This draws parallel on the plane of the box.

  • Select Parallel by Distance and enter value determined from 2D drawing (in this case 0.068)
    • Select center Cross Section and then Gravity Snap at small Arrow

  • Now you have the 3 lines for a Surface Connect.
    • Surface Connect them in the order shown setting points in approximately the same plane.
    • Hit Enter.

  • Fillet should look like this.

  • I selected the fillet and changed the color to Orange.
  • Solid Shaded Phong and a second Light added with a higher vertical setting.

  • You can get the drawing file ->
