Bookcase from 2D

  •  A tutorial to demonstrate basic concepts.
    • The basic 2D to 3D drawing contains:
      • Draw a Box
      • Duplicate, Rotate, Move
      • Linear Array with Point Relative and Reference Point
      • Extrude with Point Relative and negative value
      • Move in 3D
      • Extrude with Point Relative and positive value
      • Apply Material
  •  Step 1
    • Start in 2D mode by creating a BOX
    • Make sure 'Save as Line' is NOT selected
      • This will create a 'Plane'
    • Set a first point.
    • Hit ' (apostrophe key) and enter DX=3/4, DY=24
    • Hit ENTER
  •  Step 2
    • Select the BOX and hit 'N' to duplicate and drag the copy to the right
  •  Step 3
    • Select the Copy by the lower left corner and hit 'R' (rotate).
    • Enter -90 (minus 90) for clockwise rotate
    • Hit ENTER
  •  Step 4
    • To place the top of the shelf 4 inches up from the bottom just hit 'M' and then '
    • Enter DY=4
    • Select 'Reference Point
    • Hit ENTER
  • Step 2
    • Gravity Snap to the point at the arrow
    • The shelf will move up 4 inches from the bottom
  •  Step 3
    • To make 4 equally spaced shelves choose Linear Array
    • Enter the values shown

  •  Step 4
    • Gravity Snap to the point at the arrow to place the Array
  •  Step 5
    • Select the side at the point shown (Gravity Snap)
    • Hit 'N'
    • Place the Copy at the arrow with a Gravity Snap
  •  Step 6
    • Draw a BOX for the footplate between the 2 arrows using Gravity Snap
  •  Step 7
    • Draw another BOX for the backboard between the 2 arrows
    • We'll resize it next

 

  •  Step 8
    • Select the backboard BOX and choose 'Resizing Handles' from the toolbox
    • Select the handle at the arrow
  •  Step 9
    • Set a Gravity Snap at the arrow
    • The BOX will stretch one direction only to the exact edge of the shelves
  •  Step10
    • Switch to 3D mode
    • Select one shelf
    • While holding down SHIFT, click on the rest of the shelves and the sides so they are all selected
    • If you accidentally select the back or footplate, click it again to unselect it
    • Hit 'X' (extrude)
    • Set a point anywhere, I like to Gravity Snap to a corner
  •  Step 11
    • Now hit '
    • Enter minus 12 for DZ value and select 'Last Point'
    • Hit ENTER twice.
  •  Step 12
    • Shelves should extrude TOWARDS you.
  •  Step 13
    • Select the footplate by a corner with Gravity Snap
  •  Step 14
    • Hit 'M'
    • Drag the footplate to the front and Gravity Snap it into place at arrow
  •  Step 15
    • Hit 'X' to extrude
    • Set a point back on the corner
    • Hit '
    • Enter DZ=3/4
      • Option: Last point
    • Hit ENTER twice
  •  Step 16
    • Select the backboard
    • Extrude it DZ=1/8

Side View

    • Select All:CTRL+A
    • Right-click on any toolbox and choose 'Material'
    • Apply any wood material
    • Hit F8 (Solid Shaded) and choose Phong
    • Hit ENTER
