Framing Basics in 3D

  • A tutorial to demonstrate basic concepts.
    • The basic 3D drawing contains:
      • Drawing Boxes with Point Relative
      • Linear Array with specified distance.
      • Duplicate
      • Rotate
  •  Step 1
    • Start in 3D mode by creating a 3D Box setting a first point in the lower left of the main window.
    • Then hit ' (apostrophe) and enter X=3.5,Y=1.5,Z=12*20
    • Hit ENTER
  •  Step 2
    • Select Box again and set  a Gravity Snap at the arrow corner.
    • Hit ' and enter X=3.5,Y=96-(1.5*2),Z=1.5
      • (Height of a trimmed stud 8' minus thickness of 2 plates.)
    • Hit ENTER.
  •  Step 3
    • Select the stud at lower right corner with Gravity Snap. (opposite arrow)
      • If the plate selects first, just hit ENTER and the next object, the stud, will be selected.
    • Select Linear Array.
    • Enter the values shown to place as many studs on 16 inch centers as will fit on the plate.
    • This formula works on any length plate.
    • Row and Tier distances are unimportant. as copies are 1.

  •  Step 4
    • Now set a Gravity Snap at the arrow.
      • A line snap anywhere along the right edge of the plate would also work.

 

  •  Step 5
    • Select the lower plate by the lower right corner.
    • Hit 'N' to duplicate.
    • Place the copy on top with a Gravity Snap to the corner of the stud.
  •  Step 6
    • Zoom in on the back corner.
    • Select the last stud.
  •  Step 7
    • Duplicate it to the end of the plate at arrow.
  •  Step 8
    • Use CRTL+A to select everything.
    • Duplicate the wall and place it to the right of the first.
  •  Step 9
    • In the top view you can drag a selection window around the copy to select it.

 

  •  Step 10
    • Set a handle on the corner shown.
      • You can Group Define assemblies you want to keep making copies of.
  •  Step 11
    • Hit 'R' to rotate and enter 90 deg on Y axis.
    • Hit ENTER.
    • Move the wall with 'M' and Gravity Snap it into place.
  •  Step 12
    • Zoom in on the front lower corner.
    • Select the stud as shown and duplicate it ('N') placing it at the arrow with Gravity Snap for a scab stud.
    • This makes a corner to nail sheetrock to.

  •  These same techniques will make all your walls, interior and exterior.
