Creating a LEGO block.

  • LEGO Blocks are very basic geometric objects. This much is obvious:
    • The basic 2X4 block is twice as wide as long.
    • The round tabs on top accept blocks of any other configuration and have the thickness of 2 walls between them.
    • The barrels inside the body engage the round tabs of the top of any other block..

  • Start with a Grid with a value of 1 and a Snap Grid of .25
  • Drawing plane should be X-Z
    • Use OPTIONS to set working plane.
  • Using Double line mode, right align, and a width of .25 draw a box from top right to bottom left 5 units by 10.
  • We know that a 1X2 block fits 4 times on top of this one, so change colors and draw one AS A LINE.
  • With a new color draw the 2 circles using 'Circle Tangent to 3 Lines'.
    • The circles should touch the lines exactly.

  • Drag a selection window around the small box and circles and set a handle at the point shown.
  • Now duplicate this to the lower right corner first, and then to the other 2 spots.

  • Drag a small selection window encompassing just the central 4 corners of the small boxes while holding down CTRL. All 4 boxes should be selected.
  • Hit DEL.

  • Now use Double-line mode and 'Circle Tangent to 3 lines' to draw the 3 center barrels.

  • Choose another color and draw a single line box around the whole block.
  • Select each entity, or select all of each type as groups and make everything planes for extruding into solids.
    • Command to make line /circle entity a plane is 'Make Plane'
    • Command for Double Line is 'Double Line to Plane'.

  • Change to 3D mode.
  • Change Grid Plane to X-Y
  • Under Options menu, choose 'Set Grid Center' and click on one rear corner of the block.
    • The grid should be vertical to the block.
  • Make sure Snap Grid is ON.

  • Select the Double-line and the 3 center barrels.
  • Hit X for extrude.
  • Set a first point on the right rear corner of the block.
  • Set a second point on the snap grid 2 1/2 squares straight down.
  • Hit ENTER

  • Select all the button circles at once.
  • Hit X. Set a first point on the right top rear corner.
  • Set a second point on the Snap Grid one square straight up.
  • Hit ENTER.

  • Select the single line rectangle.
  • Hit X
  • Set first point same as above.
  • Set second point 1/2 square straight up.
  • Hit ENTER

  • In SIDE VIEW drag a selection window around just the tops of the buttons while holding down CTRL.
    • All the buttons should be selected.
  • Use SOLID SLICE and check the option 'Selection Only'
  • Choose X-Z axis.
  • Set a first point on the top right corner of the blue box.
  • Set a second point at the bottom corner of the blue box.
  • Hit ENTER
    • Just the bottoms of the buttons should be sliced off.

  • Select everything and change to a single color.
  • Bottom view with light source added.
