Pie Chart

  • A tutorial to demonstrate basic concepts.
    • The basic 2D drawing contains:
      • Text Block
      • Arc by Angle
        • Values by Equation
      • Move with Handles
      • Hatch Fill
      • Modify Hatch
      • Selection Filter
      • Line Width
      • Display Order
      • Resize Text
      • Object Align
  • Step 1
    • Start by creating a table of items and values equaling 100 percent. (these are made up!)
    • Use text size 1
    • Use spacebar to align numbers in column
      • Numbers may not line up exactly (this could be done by making them a separate text block)
    • Save file now as 'piechart'
  • Step 2
    • Have ORTHO turned on.
      • Hotkey 'H'
    • Select the first Arc command on the toolbox
      • It's the one with the ? mark
    • Enter the equation '360*.31'
      • 360 degrees times 31%
    • Set a Centerpoint and move ORTHO to the right and set a second point
  • Step 3
    • Now hit 'V' for VECTOR and draw the line from one endpoint to the centerpoint and then to the second endpoint
      • Use Gravity Snaps
    • Hit 'U' for Units, and then Gravity Snap to the centerpoint and edge of the ARC. Enter value of 1. Hit ENTER

  • Step 4
    • Draw a selection window around the whole ARC and hit CTRL+H to set HANDLES
    • Set the first HANDLE on the centerpoint
    • Click on Midpoint Snap (the M icon) and set the second HANDLE on the MIDPOINT of the ARC

  • Step 5
    • Hit 'M' to move the ARC
    • Gravity Snap back onto the ORIGINAL centerpoint and then move ORTHO straight up and set the second point (left click)

  • Step 6
    • Add the second piece of the pie with ARC and the value '360*.22'
      • 360 degrees times 22%
    • set points at 1 and 2

  • Step 7
    • Close the ARC with a VECTOR to the centerpoint
    • Repeat the process for Black, Blue and Yellow

  • Step 8
    • Finish the pie with ARC (center, begin, end)
      • The fourth ARC command on the toolbox popout

  • Step 9
    • Now select Draw->Hatch->Hatch Fill
    • I used ANSI31

  • Step 10
    • With the hatch selected, open the INFO BOX and use the SPIN BUTTONS to adjust the Hatch Size and Angle
      • I aligned the Angle toward the centerpoint
    • The Hatch will update dynamically as you adjust the settings

  • Step 11
    • Choose an off-white color on the COLOR TOOLBOX and click the APPLY icon (A)
  • Step 12
    • Repeat the Hatch Fill choosing different hatch patterns and modify sizes and angles with the Info Box
      • Fill all the hatches first, then with the Info Box open, you can click on each one in turn and modify them
  • Step 13
    • Select the corresponding colors on the Color Toolbox and apply them to the hatches
  • Step 14
    • To thicken the lines use the Edit->Selection Filter
    • Add ARCS and LINES to the filter
    • Click back into the window and then hit CTRL+A to select all the ARCS and LINES
    • Click on the LINE STYLE icon on the main toolbox, this will bring up the Line Style Toolbox
    • Click the 'Change Line Width' icon (short line)
    • Enter line width .05
    • Click 'Apply to Selection' icon (with plus sign)
    • Now go to EDIT->Display Order and choose 'Move to Top'
    • Change color to Black and apply
  • Step 15
    • Resize the header text with RESIZING HANDLES
  • Step 16
    • Draw a selection window around the whole pie and then GROUP DEFINE it
    • Do the same with the Text items on the left
    • Select the Text Group and the Pie Chart
    • Use Edit->Object Align to align the 2 items to the Vertical Middle
    • With the Text and Pie both selected, GROUP DEFINE them into one object
    • Select the Group and the Header Text and then Object Align them to the Horizontal Center
  •  Finished Pie Chart
    • Resolution is poor because of the small image size
